YOUR QUESTIONS – OUR ANSWERS

Interesting facts about the project (FAQ)

Will hydrogen change the bricks?

No. We pledge that their characteristics will remain identical: their colour, structure, strength and durability will continue to meet the current standards. The only difference will be their significantly better carbon footprint.

Why hydrogen and not electric kilns?

Electric kilns deliver homogeneous results that are sufficient for standard products, but not for clinkers with individual colour and flaming structures. The hydrogen burner should continue to ensure the diversity of our products.

What risk is involved?

Major uncertainties include energy prices, the political funding landscape and the market's reaction. However, doing nothing would pose a bigger risk.

Will I soon only be able to buy hydrogen-fired bricks from Janinhoff?

Yes. The switch will affect the entire operation. There won't be extensive test runs or parallel production. As soon as the conversion has been completed, all production will be hydrogen-based.

Who is funding the project?

Funding is being provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as part of a Carbon Contract for Difference. It is not the investments that are being funded, but the additional costs of hydrogen-based production compared to natural gas. Further information on the parties involved is available on the 'Partners' page.

How will the hydrogen get to the kiln?

Initially by trailer. A connection to the local hydrogen network operated by Thyssengas is intended for the long-term supply of hydrogen. The infrastructure is already in the planning stage.

How much CO2 will be saved?

When we are running at full capacity with hydrogen, we are anticipating a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional production with natural gas.

Will the switch lead to supply bottlenecks?

No. Conversion will be carried out in stages, the production program and deliveries will still be guaranteed.

How safely can hydrogen be handled?

Hydrogen is highly flammable, which makes handling it technically demanding. This is why we are implementing all of the necessary safety measures long before it is first used. Safety – especially that of our employees – is our top priority. We will not compromise on this.

How can I find out how the project is progressing?

You can find regular updates in our 'Blog' – with insights, construction progress and practical experience.
